Lalibella, Ethiopia

After the fall of the sacred capital Aksum in the 11th century, a new site was founded by King Lalibela, ruler of a newly united kingdom. It contains thirteen churches hewn or carved from the native tufa rock in imitation of buildings, as an attempt, it is said, to establish a new Jerusalem. The churches are unique in that all of them are connected by a labyrinth of channels, bridges and passages pockmarked with troglodyte chambers.
